(AP) ? Egypt's military-backed government on Wednesday ordered the police to clear two Cairo protest camps packed with supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi, saying they posed a threat to national security and were "terrorizing" citizens.

The move signaled an imminent crackdown against the heavily barricaded sit-ins ? one outside a mosque in eastern Cairo and another on the other side of the city near the main Cairo University campus ? and raised the prospect of more violence after clashes broke out during previous action against the mainly Islamist protesters.

More than 260 people have been killed since Morsi was ousted by the military on July 3, leaving the country between those calling for his reinstatement and millions who marched against him and his Muslim Brotherhood in a show of support for the new political order.

Police have been instructed to end the protests "within the law and the constitution," Information Minister Dorreya Sharaf el-Din said in a televised statement, although she did not specify a timeframe.

Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of the police, said the disbanding of the sit-ins will be carried out in gradual steps according to orders from prosecutors. "I hope they (Morsi supporters) resort to reason" and leave without authorities having to move in, he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

In a parallel move, prosecutors also referred three top Brotherhood leaders, including its fugitive spiritual leader Mohammed Badie, to trial for allegedly inciting the killing of anti-Morsi protesters last month.

The other two, who already are in detention, are Badie's powerful deputy Khairat el-Shater and senior Brotherhood leader Rashad Bayoumi. They are accused of inciting the killing of at least eight protesters outside the Cairo headquarters of the Brotherhood on the night of June 30 and early the next day. No date has been set for the trial, which will be held before a criminal court.

Morsi was overthrown after just one year in office by the military on July 3 after mass rallies in which millions of Egyptians calling for his ouster took to the streets. Last week, millions of Egyptians rallied on the street again to give military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi a mandate to deal with violence and "potential terrorism."

Ford's 3D-Printed Haptic Shift Knob Demonstrates the Promise of Open-Source Vehicle Telematics

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Ford research engineer Zach Nelson hacked up an Xbox 360 controller, and used an out-of-date MakerBot Thing-O-Matic, to make a rather interesting mod to a Shelby GT500: A haptic shift knob. When the RPMs hit a mere 3,000?god that car must have some awesome low-end torque?Nelson's 3D-printed custom knob vibrates, telling you it's time to shift (rather than informing you that you just ate a grenade in Call of Duty ). It might sound gimmicky, but Nelson's experiment provides a glimpse of the future. OpenXC is Ford's program to make vehicle data available to the user in realtime, with the diagnostic system beaming it to a tablet or smartphone over Bluetooth. By tapping that info, installing an Arduino controller, and programming in some simple values, Nelson was able to go from concept to execution in a matter of weeks. While some tech blogs have breathlessly been reporting that Nelson's device "will teach people how to drive a stick," that's obviously incorrect, and not the real point of the experiment; nor is the LED indicator going to be a gamechanger, as few of us who drive stick have ever been driving around going "Gee, what gear am I in?" Rather, Nelson is demonstrating that by simply opening the floodgates of a vehicle's information, Ford is enabling you customize your driving experience in a manner of your choosing. And it points towards the future: Open-source vehicle telematics, combined with digital manufacturing devices a ...

Wing-eating champ El Wingador faces NJ prison term

(AP) ? A five-time Buffalo wing-eating champion known as El Wingador has pleaded guilty to a cocaine distribution charge in New Jersey.

Gloucester County prosecutors say William Simmons pleaded guilty Monday to possession with intent to distribute. The 51-year-old Woodbury Heights resident faces a seven-year prison when he's sentenced in September. Prosecutors say they won't object if he applies for an intensive supervision program that could shorten his sentence.

Several drug charges were filed against Simmons following a June 2012 traffic stop. Simmons admitted he was using "a little bit" of cocaine at the time.

El Wingador last won Philadelphia's Wing Bowl in 2005, when he gnawed through 162 chicken wings. The Wing Bowl was started as a way for Philadelphia sports fans to blow off steam before the Super Bowl.

Some Advice About The Commercial Real Estate Market - Maynas Eric

When selling or purchasing commercial real estate it is important to have everything done properly. No matter how comfortable you feel with any area in commercial real estate, there is always the possibility that you are missing key information that could be vital. The following article offers helpful information regarding commercial real estate.

If you are considering purchasing a piece of property, be sure to investigate what the area?s unemployment rates, income levels and average property values are. If your house is near a hospital, university or other large employment centers, they will usually sell quicker and also, at a higher value.

When entering the commercial real estate market, patience is perhaps your best ally. You should never rush into a possible investment. You?ll regret it quickly if your lack of research results in a property without much re-sale value. Realistically, it can take upwards of a year to find the right investment in your local market.

TIP! Before you invest heavily in a piece of property, investigate the economics of the neighborhood such as unemployment rates, income levels and local businesses. Properties near hospitals, universities or other centers of large numbers of employees tend to sell faster and at higher-than-average values.

Similar Areas

One of the most critical considerations for valuing a commercial property is its physical location. Think about the type of neighborhood the property is in. Don?t forget to check out similar areas as well, in order to see how other neighborhoods are growing economically. By calculating growth in similar areas, you will be able to ascertain whether the piece of property you are looking at is going to continue growing.

Make sure that the commercial property has access to all utilities needed. The utilities you will need for your business go beyond electricity; you will also need water, sewer and gas, as well.

TIP! When entering the commercial real estate market, patience is perhaps your best ally. Do not rush into investments, or make decisions impulsively.

If you put the commercial property up for sale, have it inspected. If the inspections turn up any problems, remediate them before listing the property for sale.

There are a variety of types of real estate brokers who deal in commercial properties. Some brokers represent tenants only, while full service brokers will work with landlords and tenants. Consider hiring a tenant-only broker as he?ll have the most experience in dealing with situations such as yours.

If you are just getting started investing, focus on just one category of investments. Pick one type of property, at first, and pay close attention to it. It is advisable to try to do a good job at one type of investment as opposed to being average on a lot of different types.

TIP! Another factor to be aware of when shopping for property to rent or lease is who pays for pest control. In some areas, in particular in areas with known populations of pests, this is a very important concern.

When selecting a real estate broker to work with, you should ask about their negotiation strategies. Inquire about their training and experience. You want to ensure that the broker has good ethics, and is capable of obtaining the best deals possible. Ask for examples of negotiations they have participated in previously. Tell them you want to know about both positive and negative experiences.

Always ensure that the areas around your property are well taken care of. You are responsible for cleaning up your building from environmental waste. Are you considering purchasing a piece of real estate in an area prone to flooding? Take the time go think things over before taking action. If you are thinking about purchasing a property, be sure to contact an environmental assessment agency to get important information.

Pro Forma

TIP! Your investment might be very time consuming at first. Finding a good opportunity, going through the transaction and making any necessary repairs to the property takes time.

Verify that the pro forma and the rent roll match the terms. When you don?t look at the key terms with precision then it could possibly lead to change when it comes to the pro forma, because with the rent roll some terms weren?t considered.

Don?t overwhelm yourself trying to work on several types of investments at once. Put all of your attention on one investment until it?s complete. You need to focus on one type of investment, whether it be offices, apartments, land, retail, etc. Each type of investment deserves your undivided attention. Becoming a guru in one investment category is preferable to minimal success spread across multiple investments.

There are many ways available to cut down on repair costs when cleaning up the property. If you possess an ownership interest, you may not be fully responsible for cleanup costs. The costs of waste disposal and environmental cleanup can add up quickly. Consider contacting an environmental assessment company to provide you with an environmental report. They tend to be bit pricey, but they will be worth it in the end.

TIP! You must absolutely confirm that your real estate?s asking price is realistic. There are a variety of different factors that go into determining a property?s value.

When you decide to invest in commercial property, set your sights a little higher than before. If you believe that you can easily manage five units, you can probably easily manage 50. Smaller buildings must still have commercial financing, and you can often get a better deal on a bigger building.

Make certain that you know how to both recognize and benefit from good deals that present themselves. People who deal in real estate on a professional level can spot a great deal immediately. They?re so successful largely because they always keep an exit strategy in mind, and they aren?t afraid to step away from deals that have gone bad or lose their appeal. Other skills include being able to spot necessarily repairs, risk calculation, and always assuring that a property will be able to meet their financial goals.

Always stay on the lookout for sellers who are motivated to sell. You have to look for them, especially those who need to sell below the market value. Nothing happens at all in the world of real estate unless you unearth a potential deal, which is a discovery typically promptly followed by meeting a motivated seller.

TIP! If you are viewing more than one property, you may wish to create a checklist for each site. Make sure to advise the property owners when you want to take the next step past the first proposal responses.

Locate the right financing first. Financing for a commercial loan in real estate investment differs from the rules that apply to home loans. In many ways they may be better than a residential loan. Commercial loans will require a bigger down payment, but if the deal doesn?t go as planned, you?ll be able to avoid personal liability. Also, banks are often more relaxed and will allow you to borrow the down payment from a partner or a friend.

Do not make the mistake of assuming that you have learned everything there is to know when it comes to commercial real estate. Maintain a standing assumption that you have room for further education, and apply the advice from this article to build yourself better market positions. Use what you learned wisely, and make a big profit later.

Five-star status thrilled UK target Matt Elam, who stil plans to wait to make college choice in January

Matt Elam

Matt Elam

By LARRY VAUGHT

He?s met with Alabama coach Nick Saban, received 181 letters in one day from Kentucky and been to visit Ohio State and Notre Dame. Yet a recent boost in his recruiting ranking probably excited John Hardin defensive tackle Matt Elam more than anything. Elam was already a four-star recruit when he was elevated by 247Sports.com to the elite five-star status , something few players achieve.

?I was so excited when I got my fifth star,? said Elam. ?Everybody works so hard for that. I?have been working and to see it all pay off like that was amazing. I was just thrilled.?

Various schools will be just as thrilled if the mammoth defensive lineman decides to play for them. He has had Alabama, Kentucky and Louisville at the top of his college list for some time. Now he?s added Notre Dame, Ohio State and Tennessee to a top-six list.

?I have visited all six schools. I am still trying to think about where I will go on my (five) official visits,? Elam said.

His intention has been to announce his college choice at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Jan. 4, 2014 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. He wants to stick to that timetable if he can.

?It has been kind of hard, but I think I can make it through this and wait for the All-American Bowl,? Elam said. ?About every single day somebody asks me where I am going.?

He heard a lot of that on a recent visit to UK?for a summer camp that many of UK?s 2014 verbal commitments attended. That included Conner quarterback Drew Barker, who will play in the same game in San Antonio.

?Drew is kind of laid back and said when I?make my decision, he will be there beside me,? Elam said. ?But everybody there was encouraging me to go ahead and pick Kentucky. The staff was telling me they were ready for a Yahtzee (the code word UK?coaches use on Twitter when a player commits). But they calmed down as the weekend went on.?

Elam did create a bit of a stir on his visit when he tweeted pictures of UK?s new uniforms.

?I liked them a lot. I don?t know how everybody else feels about them, but the commits loved them. Everybody wants to look good when they play,? he said.

Elam was pleasantly surprised when he visited Notre Dame.

?It wasn?t high on my list but when I went up there for a visit, the coaching staff was great and the campus is beautiful. They have a lot of great tradition. It really changed my mind about Notre Dame. The staff talked a lot about how I?could come and play early,? Elam said.

What about Ohio State?

?I also loved the coaching staff there. They are staying in contact and saying I?have a great chance to play early there,? he said.

Tennessee held off offering Elam until last week. First-year coach Butch Jones has 24 commitments in his 2014 recruiting, one reason he may have waited so long to offer Elam. The John Hardin lineman says he does ?not keep grudges? but he will remember the late offer and how Tennessee at one time said he was ?too big? before later telling him he was a ?perfect fit? for the defense.

Elam, who weighs 360 pounds now but insists he?ll be down to 335 or 340 when his season starts, is strong, athletic, and explosive. His first step and hand quickness have impressed all recruiters. However, the recruiting attention could make him the center of attention from opposing teams this season.

?All this won?t change me. I?just have to slow down and focus on my year. I?have played with these guys forever. We have started practice, so I am back in the groove and working hard,? Elam said. ?My goal is to win a state championship for John Hardin and then worry about recruiting.?

He hopes Kentucky and Louisville fans come to watch him and his team play.

?We need the stands to be filled up. Past years, it has not been like that and hopefully the change will be good. If a bunch of fans come, it will help me and my team,? he said.

Longtime PM poised for victory as Cambodians vote

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) ? Cambodians went to the polls Sunday in an election almost certain to deliver another mandate for long-ruling Prime Minister Hun Sen amid cries of foul play by his opponents.

Hun Sen, who has been in power for nearly three decades, was among the early voters, casting his ballot Sunday morning near his home in Takhmau in Kandal province, south of the capital, Phnom Penh. He smiled as he walked from his car to the polling station, but declined to speak to reporters after casting his ballot, presumably to conform to rules barring any sort of campaigning during the voting period.

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy, who returned to Cambodia this month from four years in self-exile, visited a polling station near his party's office in Phnom Penh, where hundreds of voters, particularly younger ones, greeted him enthusiastically, with some of the bolder ones hugging him.

The general election was Cambodia's fifth since 1993, when the United Nations helped stage the country's first free polls since the 1975-79 genocidal rule of the Khmer Rouge and a subsequent period of civil war and one-party rule.

Counting of the paper ballots began shortly after the polls closed at 3 p.m., with representatives of political parties witnessing the process. The first unofficial results were not expected until Sunday evening.

There were many reports of voting irregularities on social media from local journalists and election watchdog groups, but an overall picture was unlikely to emerge until Monday at the earliest.

Rainsy said his party would wait before deciding what to do about the alleged irregularities, but added that if it was clear the voters' will was being denied, "definitely, there will be protests."

The streets around Hun Sen's residence in Phnom Penh were closed Sunday, with hundreds of police officers patrolling in apparent effort to guard against protests.

"I am happy to see people flocking to vote," Rainsy told reporters, though he himself was unable to vote and was not on the ballot because he failed to register in time, being in self-imposed exile until earlier this month.

The exile was to avoid a jail term for convictions that he said were politically motivated. He returned July 19 only after receiving a royal pardon at the behest of Hun Sen, his longtime and bitter rival.

The pardon was an apparent effort by Hun Sen to appease critics of the election process, including the United States, who suggested that Rainsy's exclusion was a major sign that the polls would not be free and fair.

But even with Rainsy's inclusion, critics have still charged that the process is heavily rigged. Rainsy's Cambodia National Rescue Party and nonpartisan groups say the ruling party uses the machinery of government and security forces in an unfair manner to reward or pressure voters.

They also say that voter registration procedures were badly flawed, possibly leaving more than 1 million people disenfranchised. The independent Committee for Free and Fair Elections said Saturday that the ink with which voters were supposed to stain their fingers to prevent them from voting twice was not indelible as claimed.

Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party and the government-appointed National Election Committee have said the election process is fair.

Rainsy said he visited several polling stations Sunday and noted cases where people who thought they were registered were unable to vote because their names were not listed in the rolls.

"They couldn't find their names," he said. "They (were) either deleted or removed or assigned to another polling station. So it's very confusing."

Voters in Phnom Penh seemed proud to be able to cast their ballots. Sixty-eight-year-old Meas Rith, who was voting with his wife, said he had been waiting five years since the last polls and finally received satisfaction Sunday.

"I have voted today because I want to see Cambodia progress along with other countries in the world, and I wanted to vote to select a real democratic leader for our country," he said. "I don't mind who wins the election, but I want this vote to be free and fair, and the winner to triumph honestly and the loser to lose with grace."

Rainsy, 64, anticipating a second-place finish, told reporters Saturday that any gains his party makes would be significant, and would set the stage for a long fight for fair elections. He said that even though he believed the election was unfair, his party was taking part "to show the Cambodian people that we are with them."

Before the election, Hun Sen's party held 90 of the 123 seats in the outgoing National Assembly. Although eight parties were running, the CNRP and CPP were the only serious contenders.

Opposition parties had held 29 seats in the assembly, but were kicked out of the body shortly before election campaigning began on the technical grounds that they had registered to run in the name of the new CNRP, formed by a merger of the two existing opposition parties under whose banners they had won their seats.

The campaign generated great excitement, especially among young people in Phnom Penh, where large crowds of supporters of the two main parties staged spirited rallies. Cambodia has 9.7 million registered voters in a population of almost 15 million, and just over half the electorate is under 30 years old.

Hun Sen, 60, has been in power for 28 years and says he has no intention of stepping down soon. His authoritarian rule has given him a stranglehold over the state bureaucracy that makes challenges to his authority difficult to mount.

The prime minister ran on a record of having restored peace and stability after decades of war and unrest, and promoting economic growth. The opposition decried corruption and injustice, especially reflected in widespread land-grabbing that see influential companies and businessmen develop property from which thousands of people have been evicted.

The election campaign was not marked by the kind of violence, including killings, that plagued past polls.

Train with 7 tanker cars of oil derails in Lloydminster

LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. - Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a train pulling tanker cars to derail in Lloydminster.

Canadian Pacific (TSX:CP) spokesman Ed Greenberg says a locomotive and seven cars carrying oil left the tracks Friday afternoon in the city that straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary.

Greenberg says the train was moving out of a rail yard at the time and wasn't on the main line.

RCMP in Lloydminster say nothing spilled from the cars and no evacuations were necessary.

Some diesel spilled from the locomotive but police say it was contained.

Greenberg says no one was injured and the public was never at risk.

"A full investigation is being conducted to determine what took place ? not just the cause, but the circumstances that led to the cause," Greenberg said Saturday.

RCMP say the investigation is being turned over to CP police.

Tracy McGrady says he may return to China next season

By Matt Moore | NBA writer

Tracy McGrady is considering a return to China. (USATSI)
Tracy McGrady is considering a return to China. (USATSI)

So close. Tracy McGrady finally got to the Finals this season as a bench-riding non-factor for the Western Conference Champion Spurs. He was 28 seconds from a championship ring. But alas, the Heat prevailed, and now McGrady continues to ponder his future.

Over the weekend at an event in China, McGrady told reporters he may consider a return to the Chinese Basketball Association, where he spent most of last season.

In a pre-game press conference in Nanning, McGrady said he might come back to China Basketball Association (CBA) league despite its under par competitive environment.

"For those who have played years in NBA and still want to prolong their career like me, CBA is a great alternative," said McGrady who played a whole CBA season before he joined the Spurs, clutched 25 points, 7.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, and his all-star performance help him sustain his highly respectable status in China.

McGrady still enjoys great support from Chinese fans. According to media, in the Yao Foundation Charity Game he attended, spectators made several attempts to invite him on the court, yelling "T-Mac" , "T-Mac" throughout the last quarter of the game.

"China is a huge market. Last season when I played for Tsingtao Doublestar, the fans were incredible. I had a great time there," said McGrady.

But he didn't reveal much about the next stop of his career. "I am happy to be home with my wife and kids. But if possible, I may come back to CBA. I haven't really thought about that," said McGrady.

via Possibility of McGrady's return to CBA not ruled out - China.olrg.cn.

So not exactly a ringing endorsement or a pledge to return to the CBA, but it's at least on the table. It mostly depends on whether McGrady wants to hang around in suits and be a locker room guy or go on a fun tour of China, make more money, and have a comfortable life for another season.

There's also nothing stopping him from doing what he did last season and play in the CBA for the year, then hop on to a playoff team when the CBA season ends. As long as he wants to play, that might be the best of both worlds, and it provides us for the exceptionally entertaining moments of "Tracy McGrady: Victory Cigar."

Players getting older like this is kind of weird.

US says Israel-Palestine set to resume long-stalled peace talks

Washington, July 29 (ANI): Israel and Palestine will resume face-to-face peace talks on Monday in Washington, the State Department has said.

Secretary of State John Kerry?s six months of frenetic shuttle diplomacy is being credited for the long-stalled peace talks to begin.

Agency spokeswoman Jen Psaki said both the countries had accepted invitations from Kerry to come to Washington to formally resume direct final status negotiations.

According to Fox News, Psaki said Kerry on Sunday called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Following the telephonic conversation, the leaders agreed the talks would ?serve as an opportunity to develop a procedural work plan for how the parties can proceed with the negotiations in the coming months,? the report said.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Molcho will represent the Israelis and the Palestinians will be represented by Chief Negotiator Saeb Erekat and Mohammad Shtayyeh. (ANI)

Telus, Bell, Rogers 'Disingenuous' About Verizon's Potential Canada Expansion

**Editor's Note: Please click here for a recap of the biggest mergers in Q2 2013.**

Talk of Verizon buying a wireless operator in Canada is really stirring the pot.

Responding to concerns from Rogers Communications' CEO this week, Wind Mobile boss Anthony Lacavera said the idea that the country's regulations favor foreign telecom investment have no merit. Calling the claim "disingenuous," Lacavera told The Globe and Mail that there's no disadvantage for Rogers, Telus or Bell if they want to pursue the purchase of a smaller operator. Wind Mobile is a rumored acquisition target of Verizon.

Wind Mobile is Canada's fifth-largest wireless provider, with approximately 600,000 subscribers. By comparison, Rogers has more than 9 million and both Telus and Bell are over 7 million.

Canada's government has acknowledged wanting conditions ripe for a fourth national carrier that will increase competition. It recently did away with restrictions that previously required foreign investors to pursue a wireless company with less than 10 percent market share. And it blocked Telus from buying Mobilicity in part because its spectrum license doesn't expire until next year.

But Lacavera says the big telcos got plenty of help from the government when they established their wireless businesses, noting the allotment of spectrum in the '80s and '90s that gave the Big Three a significant advantage in the first place.

Bell Canada came out late this week with a two-page newspaper ad complaining about a perceived favoritism toward Verizon, citing a series of regulatory loopholes that the U.S. communications can use to its advantage if it wants to become a player in Canada's mobile market, the CBC noted.

Arsenal boss Wenger learned from Japan experience

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger credits a bold decision to coach in Japan early in his career with helping him become one of the most successful managers in the Premier League.

Wenger spent 18 months in charge of the J-league's Nagoya Grampus before joining the Gunners in September 1996 and said the move had a significant impact on his career.

The 63-year-old is still highly regarded by Japanese football fans. A near-capacity crowd of 43,000 was on hand when Arsenal beat Nagoya 3-1 in a preseason friendly.

Upon arriving in Japan, Wenger quickly brought respect to a team that in the previous year was at the bottom of the league.

Under Wenger, Nagoya won the national cup competition and the Frenchman received the J-League manager of the year award in 1995.

"Coming to Japan is something that changed me profoundly," Wenger said on Arsenal's website. "It helped me because I took a distance from the pressure in Europe and came back with a different viewpoint. I can take more distance from decisions now than I could before."

After Nagoya, Wenger went on to lead Arsenal to three Premier League titles and four F.A. Cups.

At the time, the J-League was only in its third season and was a long way from being a competition that would produce the likes of Shinji Kagawa, Yuto Nagatomo and Keisuke Honda.

While he influence the Japanese game tactically, he also learned a lot from the Japanese in areas such as training and diet.

His impact on the game here is still being felt almost 20 years after he left. Nagoya's current manager Dragan Stojkovic played under Wenger in Japan and has gone on to be one of the most successful foreign managers in Japan, having guided the team to the championship in 2010.

"I have learned a lot from (Arsene) over the years," Stojkovic said before his team played Arsenal. "I have visited London many times over the years and will continue to do so."

Wenger said that had it not been for an offer to manage a big club in Europe, he might have spent many more years in Japan.

"It was quite emotional," Wenger said. "I have so many fond memories from my time in Nagoya."

USGBC- SC Chapter ? Blog Archive ? Nominate A Veteran in Need ...

The South Carolina Association of Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors? new Cool Aid, Warms Hearts program is teaming up with the South Carolina Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council to help veterans in need beat the heat this summer and to help them save money.

Nominate a veteran now for the chance to have a licensed HVAC professional install a new heating and air conditioning system. In addition, experts with The SC Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will ensure the veteran?s home is energy efficient through its Homes for Heroes program.

This isn?t just a one-time gift. Having a licensed HVAC professional install a heating and air conditioning system, combined with improving energy efficiency can substantially cut monthly electric bills.

?In one case, a veteran was having to choose between paying to keep his house cool, or paying for his medicine. Nobody should have to make that choice, especially someone who was willing to sacrifice his life for our country?, Melissa Le Roy, USGBC SC Executive Director said.

?We?re proud to able to give back to these Americans who?ve given up so much for us. Our goal is to try and do this for veterans in need state wide,? Leigh Faircloth with the SC Association of Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors said.

University of Michigan archaeologist discovers 16th century Spanish fort

The University of Michigan archaeologist Robin A. Beck Jr. discovered a 16th century fort in western North Carolina this week.

According to an article in The New York Times, the fort was located pretty far inland, just five miles north of Morganton, North Carolina.?

Dr. Beck was working with other archaeologists from the University of New Orleans and Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C. when they found evidence of a fort's moat, that indicated the fort could definitely be the remains of Fort San Juan.

Fort San Juan was built in 1567 by Juan Pardo, an explorer who led an expedition from the Atlantic coast, inland from 1566-68:

A vast interior seemed open for the taking. This was almost 20 years before the failure of the English at Sir Walter Raleigh's "lost colony" near the North Carolina coast or their later successes in Virginia at Jamestown in 1607 and at Plymouth Rock in 1620 -- the 'beginnings' emphasized in the standard colonial history taught in American schools.

The Times wrote that Beck and his team first discovered the fort's moat when excavating a ceremonial Native American burial mound. The moat was indicated by different colored soil under the mound.?

Part of the fort's defensive moat had been cut through the southern side of the mound. Dr. Neck said that further excavations and magnetometer subsurface readings showed that the moat appeared to extend more than 70 to 100 feet and measured nearly 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep, in a configuration of "typical European moats going back to the Romans."

Other remote sensing surveys showed subsurface anomalies suggesting burned timbers of the palisades and an irregularity that may well be ruins of the "strong house" inside, where tools, weapons and lead shot were stored. Investigating these artifacts is on the agenda for next summer's excavations, Dr. Beck said.?

Thousands rally against Texas abortion bill on first day of new special session

Mike Stone / Reuters

Protesters hold signs and cheer during a protest before the start of a special session of the Legislature in Austin, Texas, on July 1.

By Andrew Rafferty, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Texas Capitol became the center of America's abortion debate again on Monday?as thousands of demonstrators were on hand to voice opposition to Republican-backed legislation that would dramatically limit abortion rights in the state.

The protests came at the start of a special legislative session called by Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry after a bill that would have essentially ban most abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy was halted last week.

The effort was led by Democratic state Senator Wendy Davis, who became a national icon for abortion-rights advocates after standing for?hours to filibuster the legislation.

Related: Rising political star Wendy Davis

"Less than a week ago you were at the crux of a turning point in Texas history, you joined the ranks of brave men and women who love this state and fought for their liberties and preserving Texas values,"?Davis told thousands gathered on the steps of the state capitol in Austin, Texas, on Monday. ?Many wore orange and held "Stand With Wendy" signs.

Anti-abortion supporters and pro-abortion rights supporters crowd into the rotunda of the Texas capitol, on July 1, in Austin, Texas.

"It was your voices lent to me that made it possible for me to stand those 13 hours," she said.

Also on hand to support Davis was Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks and actress Lisa Edelstein.

On the final day of a legislative session, Davis held the floor for over ten hours to prevent a vote on the controversial bill.

Texas Republicans attempted to use parliamentary maneuvers to pass the bill before the session came to a close, but?protestors?in the gallery shouted so loudly that the lawmakers were unable to hear and the could not pass the bill before the midnight deadline.?

Opponents of the bill view it as a way for Republicans to cripple abortion clinics in the deeply conservative state. Supporters say the measure is an important one to protect the health of women.

A smaller group of the proposed law's supporters were also on hand, many wearing blue and singing "Amazing Grace."

Perry and Texas Republicans have vowed to pass the bill.?

"We will not allow the breakdown of decorum and decency to prevent us from doing what the people of this state hired us to do," Perry said in a statement announcing a second special legislative session.? ??

The abortion bill on Monday was referred to committees for public hearings before the legislature?recessed?for the week. There will be no action on the bill until at least July 9.

NYC's gay pride march celebrates Supreme Court win

NEW YORK (AP) ? Only days after the Supreme Court used her lawsuit to grant same-sex couples federal marriage benefits, Edith Windsor helped lead New York City's Gay Pride march on Sunday.

Signs along the route read, "Thank you, Edie" ? celebrating Windsor for her successful challenge of a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

"If somebody had told me 15 years ago that I would be the marshal of New York City's gay pride parade in 2013, at the age of 84, I wouldn't have believed it."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined hundreds of bikers whose motorcycles roared to life at noon to kick off the celebration, a colorful cavalcade of activists and others who marched down Fifth Avenue 44 years after the city's first pride march.

"We're Dykes on Bikes," announced Marcia Jackson, of Burbank, Calif., a member of the lesbian motorcycle club who clutched the waist of Tyrone White on their motorcycle. Jackson grinned as she explained White's connection to the sisterhood ? he's undergoing a sex-change procedure.

Longtime LGBT activist Cathy Renna said Windsor's suit and the Supreme Court's favorable ruling in a challenge to Proposition 8, the California gay marriage ban, made this year's celebration special.

"It is an especially thrilling year to march this year," she said. "I have seen more real progress in the past three years than the nearly two decades of activism before it."

But, she added, "we must remain vigilant; hate crimes, discrimination and family rejection loom in our lives still."

A spate of recent hate crimes in New York provide a stark reminder of work left to be done. In one case last month, police said a gunman used homophobic slurs before firing a fatal shot into a man's face on a Manhattan street alive with a weekend midnight crowd. The city's police commissioner called it an anti-gay hate crime.

A. Carlos Cardinas, a native of Colombia who lives in Queens, is a transvestite who dressed up in festive attire for the day: a green sequined top with a salmon-colored flower ringing the waist.

"We are so happy to live free in America," said Cardinas, a hairdresser who is engaged to be married to his boyfriend.

Carl Siciliano, who heads the Ali Forney drop-in center for homeless gay youth in Harlem, said he's happy about the court decision. But he said the humanitarian fight is not over.

"Now that our adults have won this wonderful victory, it is time for us to begin to build a safety net for the more than 200,000 homeless LGBT youth who are stranded on America's streets without shelter," said Siciliano.

Windsor said she long enjoyed the parade with her late wife, Thea Spyer, whom she married in Canada as Spyer was dying in 2007.

In 2009, she suffered a heart attack a month after Spyer's death. While recovering, Windsor faced a hefty bill for inheritance taxes ? more than $363,000, because Spyer was, legally, just a friend.

On Sunday, Windsor was one of three grand marshals, joining musician and activist Harry Belafonte and Earl Fowlkes, head of the Center for Black Equity.

"I have marched in the parade for the last several years carrying a huge rainbow flag," she said. "Last year, I was so elated that I danced my way down the whole street, for the entire route of the parade."

A Useful Twitter Advanced Search Sheet for Teachers

The next revolution in the world of online search will probably be instigated by social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook. Both of these platforms are developing some robust search engines to serve the needs of their users. The good thing about this "social searching" is that they are based on real time interaction of people with the information being shared online. So instead of getting search results that are prioritized according to an algorithmic ranking as is the case with Google page rank and Alexa rank, now your query will be met with live feed of results pertaining to things people are talking about.

?If you use Twitter search engine to look for say digital safety, you will probably get better and more refined search results than you would get from Google or Yahoo. You basically get links that other like minded people have shared and around which there has been some discussions that you can read as well. This is a huge step forward in the improvement of search quality. Welcome to Web 3.0!

In this context, Twitter is working hard to enhance the performance of its search functionality. They have now what is called Twitter advanced search engine. Next time you use Twitter search and?it does not turn up results for your desired terms, you may want to use these search operators :
