Yoga in public schools latest test of free speech

Should yoga sessions in public schools be subject to the same restrictions as religious ceremonies? A group of 60 Southern California parents thinks so?they want to pull yoga out of their school district?s curriculum.

Yoga_Class_at_a_Gym4The yoga controversy is the latest twist on the contentious issue of anything having to do with religion in schools funded by taxpayer dollars.

In this case, a lawyer for the parents says yoga has ties to Hinduism and that there is no place for it in the Encinitas Union School District.

?There?s a deep concern that the Encinitas Union School District is using taxpayer resources to promote Ashtanga yoga and Hinduism, a religion system of beliefs and practices,? their attorney, Dean Broyles, told the North County Times, a regional newspaper.

The district has classes in nine schools and is reportedly set to receive a $500,000 grant from an Ashtanga yoga institute to expand the classes. Its superintendent has said he doesn?t plan to stop the classes.

Broyles told ABC News that Ashtanga yoga is indeed a religious practice.

?The poses and positions are acknowledged by Ashtanga and Hindi yoga as forms of worship and prayers to Hindu deities,? he told ABC. ?They have a spiritual and religious meaning behind them.?

Broyles said after doing his own research, he?s convinced Ashtanga yoga in public schools is a constitutional issue.

?We think that children are being used as guinea pigs,? he told ABC. ?It would be like a charismatic Christian organization funding classes in worship and praise.?

The yoga controversy comes after two other high-profile cases about religious expression at publicly funded schools.

In those cases in Texas and Tennessee, the debate is over Christian prayer and Christian slogans at a prominent university and a local high school.

Recent Constitution Daily Stories

Inside America?s first dirty presidential campaign, 1796 style
Romney?s ace could come from a mystery swing state

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which promotes separation of church and state, is involved in both situations.

In Texas, a group of high school cheerleaders won the latest legal skirmish over their display of religious slogans on banners used at football games.

A judge has agreed with the students that the slogans were an individual expression of private free speech. That case is headed to trial next year after the students won an injunction.

Constitution Daily contributor Lyle Denniston said in his case analysis for us earlier this week that the judge?s focus was on the application of free speech principles, not religion.

?It was not decisive, for this judge, that the message is, in fact, only a Christian one. It thus is up to the cheerleaders to choose, or not, to vary the message so that it reflects religious tolerance as well as religious freedom. That is a civics lesson, even if not one required by the Constitution,? he said.

The other high-profile case involves the University of Tennessee at Knoxville football program, which has traditionally invoked a public prayer in its stadium before football games.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation said some alumni complained about the tradition, and were upset that the name of Jesus Christ was used during the prayers. It asked the school to stop the practice.

In September, another school in the state system, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, said it would use a moment of silence at games, in response to a similar complaint from the foundation.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is continuing with non-sectarian prayers at the games.

In its dialogue with the university, Freedom From Religion Foundation cited the historic Santa Fe v. Jane Doe decision in 2000 that barred prayers at high school football games; the County of Allegheny v. American Civil Liberties Union case from 1989 (which barred nativity scenes from a courthouse); and Abington vs. Schempp from 1963 (which halted the reading of Bible passages in public schools).

The school said there was nothing wrong with a pre-kickoff invocation.

A Revolving Door to Avoid - NYTimes.com

Two weeks ago, Dr. Arif Nazir got a call from a colleague about a 79-year-old woman at an Indianapolis hospital. The cardiologist on the phone explained there was nothing more that could be done for this patient, who had advanced heart failure, chronic lung disease and diabetes.

After a brief conversation, Dr. Nazir agreed to admit her to a nursing home and try to keep her out of the hospital, respecting her recently signed ?do not resuscitate? order, or D.N.R.

It was a promise that was broken within several hours, much to Dr. Nazir?s dismay. The reasons highlight troublesome problems with long-term care that frequently frustrate caregivers and that are receiving fresh attention from medical providers and Medicare.

At the nursing home, staff members noticed several hours after her transfer that the patient?s oxygen levels were very low. This was to be expected given her condition, Dr. Nazir said, but no one picked up the phone to ask his advice.

Instead, a doctor on call who wasn?t familiar with the patient or her recent medical history gave the order to send her back to the hospital ? just where the patient, her son and her physician didn?t want her to go.

This might not have happened if the woman?s D.N.R. order had traveled with her when she was discharged from the hospital. But that didn?t happen, and staff members in the nursing home had no way of knowing what this patient?s wishes were (she was groggy and unable to say at that time) or whom they should contact to find out.

This is a distressingly common problem. D.N.R.?s signed in hospitals aren?t regularly transferred to skilled nursing facilities. So when crises arise (and this occurs often in frail, sick older patients) no one knows what to do, and shipping the patient off to the hospital becomes the default option.

That may seem like a sensible choice ? after all, hospitals are where really sick people go to get better ? but for nursing home patients it can have deleterious consequences.

Dr. Nazir, a geriatrician at Indiana University and a staff physician at several Indianapolis nursing homes, explained why, using the example of another patient in her late 80s with advanced Alzheimer?s disease who becomes excessively agitated and combative at night.

?When she goes to the hospital, she will be seen by a physician who doesn?t know her, usually for only a few minutes,? he said. ?Most likely, he?ll end up doing a lot of tests because histories are not readily available for these nursing home patients.?

Because the patient is old, with several other medical conditions, ?every test this physician does is going to come out with some kind of abnormality, and she?ll be admitted for further evaluation and observation.?

In the hospital environment, this older woman with cognitive impairment will feel disoriented and most likely afraid. ?There will be lots of strangers, lots of noise, perhaps little sleep, and she will be at very high risk of becoming even more agitated,? Dr. Nazir said. ?At that point, she?s going to get aggressive medications.?

In short order, this patient may become sedated, delirious and confined to bed. Upon discharge, an older person like this ?will come back to us very debilitated, really having lost a lot of quality of life? and often unable to regain it, Dr. Nazir said.

Few caregivers realize this is a likely chain of events. Rarely do nursing home doctors or nurses sit down and explain the risks of hospitalizing a frail older person who is profoundly physically and mentally compromised.

This is the set of problems that a new pilot program of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services hopes to address. The program is to be introduced in Alabama, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and Pennsylvania later this year, and I?ll describe how it works in a future post.

What about you? Have you had experiences along the lines of those described by Dr. Nazir? Have you witnessed this all-too-frequent revolving door between nursing home and hospital and seen its adverse effects?

Park District preparing to open the new leased space for winter 2013 programs

Following the winter holidays, Naperville residents can look forward to a tempting menu of fun, educational, and healthy activities offered by the Naperville Park District in the newly renovated Fry Property Building at 2244 W. 95th St. in south Naperville.

At their October 11, 2012 regular meeting, the Naperville Park District Board of Commissioners formally named the new recreation space the 95th St. Center. The District holds a three-year lease for 11,500 square feet of indoor programming space at the Center. The leased space includes:

  • 2 multipurpose rooms
  • A wood floor studio

  • A culinary teaching kitchen with 6 full kitchen teaching stations
  • A lounge/waiting area
  • A full service customer service counter
  • Staff offices

?Our recreation staff is excited to be able to offer a full range of programs for all ages at this south side location,? said Director of Recreation Brad Wilson. ?Beginning in January, residents and nonresidents can participate in new sewing and cooking classes, dance classes, yoga, Pilates, gymnastics, arts and crafts, computer explorers, knitting, weight loss classes, and much more.?

?The teaching kitchen setup is unique in Naperville, with six teaching stations in one room,? said Program Manager Sandie Gilmer. ?Class participants will be able to practice what the instructor is teaching while the demonstration is taking place,? she said. The culinary space also will be available for rentals by families and small groups for personal use.

Following the completion of building renovations in November, the Naperville Park District will move furniture and equipment into the space. On Saturday, December 8, the community is invited to a Grand Opening celebration from 9-11:30 a.m. Participants will be able to try a variety of different activities to get a taste of the new classes being offered at the 95th St. Center.

Spears hooked on drugs in '07, ex-pal testifies

AP file

Sam Lutfi leaves UCLA medical center after visiting Britney Spears in Los Angeles in January 2008.

By Reuters

LOS ANGELES --?Pop star Britney Spears' former confidante encouraged her to kick her drug habit five years ago, and brought drug-sniffing dogs to her Malibu home and flushed a bag of white powder down the toilet, he testified Tuesday.?

"She had wanted to get clean, but she was struggling with it," the former friend, Sam Lutfi, told jurors in his civil trial in Los Angeles against Spears and her parents.?

"I told her she needed to do it because she was the mother of two young sons... I told her that society wouldn't tolerate a mother who was abusing drugs."?

Lutfi claims that Spears hired him as her manager for several months in 2007 and 2008, after she became estranged from her family and staff in the midst of a personal and professional breakdown.?

He is seeking 15 percent of her earnings from that period, which were believed to be $800,000 to $1 million per month.?

Attorneys representing Spears argue that Lutfi was never the singer's manager.?

Lutfi said he met Spears in a nightclub in spring of 2007, while she was embroiled in a tough child custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline and struggling to kick drug addiction.?

"She wasn't working. She said that she had fired everybody," Lutfi said. "She told me that she had fired her agent. She told me that she had fired her manager, her bodyguards, her publicist, as well."?

Spears told him she infamously shaved her head in February 2007 because she was afraid her hair could be tested for drugs and used against her in her child custody battle against Federline, Lutfi testified.?

"Britney was involved in a wicked child custody battle," Lutfi said. "She told me someone had told her that they can scientifically test her hair for a history of drug use, so she shaved it off."?

The trial has torn the veil off Spears' meltdown when she was twice hospitalized, lost custody of her children, and photographs of her shaving her head and swinging an umbrella made international headlines.?

Lutfi is also suing Spears' mother, alleging she libeled him in her 2008 book, "Through the Storm", in which she claimed Lutfi destroyed Britney Spears' telephone lines, may have drugged her food and tried to cut off the singer from her family. He is suing Spears' father for assault.?

Lutfi testified on Tuesday that Spears offered him a job as her manager soon after they met.?

Lutfi, a college dropout who dabbled in the entertainment industry, at first doubted he was qualified to take the position, but Spears kept asking, he testified.?

Finally, he agreed to take the job, but on two conditions: Britney would stop taking drugs and allow him to bring in an agent and a lawyer to make up for his inexperience.?

"She agreed," Lutfi said. "We even shook hands on it."?

Lutfi said he brought the drug-sniffing dogs to her home on June 13, 2007, as one of his first actions as the pop star's manager.?

He also advised her against going on tour that year because he feared she would have easy access to drugs and would miss out on visits with her young sons, Lutfi testified.?

/

Lutfi said Spears had a drug relapse in September 2007 and called him in October after spending a night in her car. She asked him to move in with her, although their relationship was strictly professional, and never romantic, he said.?

Lutfi told jurors he was never compensated for his work and his out-of-pocket expenses were never repaid.?

Earlier this week, the record label executive who signed Spears when she was 16 testified that he believed Lutfi was a "gofer" who performed only menial tasks for the "Toxic" singer.?

Spears, who has not attended the trial, was placed under her father's conservatorship in 2008, giving him control of her health and finances. Now 30, she has made a comeback with world tours, hit albums and a new job as a judge on TV talent show "The X Factor."

Investors Call on Canadian Oil Sands Producers to Improve Environmental and Social Performance

$2 Trillion Group of Investors Propose Higher Standards for Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Water Management, Land Reclamation and Consultations with First Nations

BOSTON, Oct. 22 /CSRwire/ - As presidential candidates spar over the issue of North American energy independence, a group of 49 investors with $2 trillion in assets under management are calling on Canadian oil sands developers to dramatically reduce the environmental and social impact of their operations by lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, managing water use, promoting land reclamation and consulting fully with First Nations and other communities affected by oil sands projects. The investors argued that these performance improvements ?should be prioritized ahead of unmitigated growth ambitions for oil sands development.?

The investors? statement of expectations was delivered to Canada?s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance (COSIA), an industry-led group formed in March with the specific goal of improving the industry?s environmental performance.

?We are supportive of COSIA?s goal to ?accelerate the pace and scope of environmental innovation? to put the oil sands on a more sustainable path, as well as its focus on transparency and accountability,? the investors wrote in the statement. ?We believe that COSIA?s effectiveness will be greatly enhanced by setting specific goals for improving environmental and social performance along with detailed plans for achieving them.?

Canadian oil sands production is already at 1.6 million barrels per day, the vast majority of which goes to the U.S. Last year, the U.S. imported as much oil from the Canadian oil sands as it did from Saudi Arabia, the second largest source of U.S. oil imports. Oil sands production is projected to grow to 4.2 million barrels per day by 2025.

Oil sands development is significantly more resource-intensive than traditional oil development, creating environmental and social concerns that investors argue may threaten the sector?s long-term viability and growth.

In their statement, investors specifically called on COSIA to:

  • Set goals and timelines for reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of oil sands production to at least that of conventional oil production, while also providing greater disclosure on research and development efforts and supporting provincial and federal regulations that would lead to significant reductions in GHG emissions.
  • Manage water risk by setting goals and timelines for minimizing net surface and groundwater withdrawals, and keeping withdrawals within science-based ecosystem limits.
  • Reduce the rate of land disturbance and increase reclamation, provide disclosure of liabilities, establish wetlands and biodiversity offsets and accept limits to the amount of land available to oil sands development at any given time.
  • In cooperation with government authorities, fully incorporate the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent in their responsibilities to First Nations, Metis, Inuit and other communities affected by oil sands operations.

?Oil sands companies cannot ignore these performance improvements in the name of unmitigated growth. The risks to their industry and investors are simply too great,? said Matthias Beer, senior analyst of governance & sustainable investment at F&C Asset Management, a U.K-based investment firm. ?This statement of expectations asks oil sands companies to hold themselves to reasonable standards, which we believe is a necessary step in protecting the long-term financial viability of this resource.?

?This is a clear sign that investors are dissatisfied with the status quo in Canada?s oil sands, but the expectations it lays out are achievable,??said?Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres,?a sustainability advocacy group that organized the initiative. ?Oil sands companies must listen to their investors and substantially improve their environmental and social performance. Investors are telling these companies to prioritize these critical issues before they embark on aggressive growth plans."

In 2010, Ceres commissioned the report,?Canada's?Oil?Sands: Shrinking Window of Opportunity, which provides further detail on the financial and environmental risks of oil sands development including land, water and greenhouse gas management.

About Ceres

Ceres?is an advocate for sustainability leadership.?Ceres?mobilizes a powerful coalition?of investors, companies and public interest groups to accelerate and expand the adoption of sustainable business practices and solutions to build?a healthy global economy.?Ceres also directs the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR), a network of 100 institutional investors with collective assets totaling more than $10 trillion. ?

Seattle Schools Community Forum: More Special Ed Coverage

KUOW also has a report on Special Education in SPS.? It is heartbreaking and, to me, confusing.

Confusing because in the first story, about a little boy named Ryder, it labels him as being on the "autism spectrum."? It states he received services in? preschool and yet, he can't get them in SPS?? If he has a diagnosis, then he should be receiving services.

Then there is another child in the story, Tenzin, who also has autism and yet he can't get something simple like instructions in a written form.? (I was able to get that for my son in high school and that was multiple teachers and no one called it a problem.)?

His mom says,
"...the quality of special education in Seattle schools depends too much on how well a school?s principal understands the federal law that guarantees services to kids with disabilities."? It shouldn't be that way.???

This almost seems to echo DeBell's comment about how expensive it is to serve Special Ed students.? We all know that but the alternative is to ignore or frustrate them and their families?? I'd really like to know what President DeBell thinks should be happening.? Does he think families are looking for these diagnoses for their children?? Does he think it is easy to have a child with special needs??

Banda says:
"I need someone who?s actually been in the trenches, who?s been in the battles. Somebody?s who?s seasoned. Somebody that has been in that level of leadership in administration that is not only familiar with special ed needs but special ed law, building team, potentially with the idea of restructuring that whole department," Banda says.

I'd like to do more than cross my fingers that SPS finds that person.?

(AP) ? Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel, who will get his first parole hearing Wednesday, deserves to be released from prison a decade after he was convicted of killing his neighbor because he was a victim of a miscarriage of justice and has been a model inmate, his supporters say.

But the victim's relatives want Skakel kept in prison the rest of his life, saying he was properly convicted and has shown no remorse.

Skakel is serving 20 years to life for beating Martha Moxley to death with a golf club in 1975 in Greenwich when they were 15-year-old neighbors. Skakel is a nephew of Robert F. Kennedy's widow, Ethel Kennedy.

"There's never been a person more deserving of parole than Michael Skakel," his attorney, Hope Seeley, said in a statement. "His track record during the past 10 years shows the person we all know him to be ? caring, generous and committed to his faith, family and friends. His conviction was a miscarriage of justice, but that aside, his further incarceration would also be a miscarriage of justice in light of the fact that he should have been sentenced as a juvenile."

Skakel has lost appeals challenging his conviction that raised the juvenile issue and other claims.

Martha Moxley's mother, Dorthy, and brother, John, want him kept in prison for life. Skakel has shown no remorse, John Moxley said.

"Michael Skakel is representative of the most dangerous aspect of our society in that he was raised in an environment in which he was exposed to and at some point embraced the mindset that the rules of our general society did not then and do not now apply to him," Moxley wrote in a letter to the parole board. "And, I believe that Michael Skakel's inbred sense of self and his self-confessed quick temper will always represent a threat to society."

He said the murder continues to haunt him.

"No child should ever have to witness the pain I have seen my parents go through, which I know in my heart contributed to my father's early death," Moxley wrote.

Skakel's brother, John, said in a statement that criticism of his family was unfair.

"We have been hurting just as long ? because we know that Michael did not kill Martha Moxley," John Skakel said.

Officials say Skakel is eligible to be released in April if parole officials approve it at the hearing scheduled for Wednesday in Suffield.

Skakel, convicted in 2002, is eligible for parole consideration because of laws in place at the time of the crime including good behavior credits.

In March, Skakel lost his bid for a reduction in his prison sentence. A three-judge panel rejected Skakel's request, saying there was nothing inappropriate or disproportionate about the sentence.

The 52-year-old Skakel insisted on his innocence at the hearing, citing so-called truth serums he has taken that are used to help people remember.

"Give me a polygraph," Skakel told the judges. "I've passed three sodium pentothal tests. I don't know what else to say."

Dorthy Moxley rejected Skakel's claims of innocence.

"I truly believe he is the one who murdered Martha," she said last month. "I'm sure he's the one who swung the golf club."

Asked about the impact of the crime, Moxley said, "When you lose a loved one, it just never goes away."

The state Supreme Court ruled in 2010 against Skakel's bid for a new trial, saying a claim implicating two other men in the killing wasn't credible. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the case. Skakel has a habeas corpus appeal pending in state courts, accusing his trial attorney, Michael Sherman, of doing a poor job, a claim Sherman has rejected.

Skakel, who was arrested in 2000, has not had any disciplinary issues in prison, said Brian Garnett, spokesman for the state Department of Correction.

"Does Michael deserve to be paroled? Michael doesn't deserve to have been locked away for the last 10 years because he is innocent, but through this horrendous decade, Michael has been a model inmate and has chosen to use this time constructively," his brother John wrote in a letter to the parole board.

9 killed in clashes in southeast Turkey

(AP) ? Turkey's state-run agency says clashes between Turkish security forces and Kurdish rebels in the southeast of the country have left nine people dead.

The Anatolia news agency says Saturday three Turkish troops and three Kurdish rebels were killed in fighting that broke out in Hakkari province, near the border with Iraq.

The agency said rebels also attacked a military unit in Bitlis province, northwest of Hakkari, killing three government-paid village guards who are helping the Turkish security forces.

The attack comes amid a sharp escalation in violence over the past few months in Turkey's southeast, where the rebels of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, are fighting for self-rule for Kurds.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the group took up arms in 1984.

FAU networking research to improve road safety | University Press

Professor Imad Mahgoub. Photo courtesy of Media Relations.

The future of driving is being shaped by an FAU professor.

Imad Mahgoub, a computer science professor from the university?s department of computer and electrical engineering, received a $330,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) ? the main funding source for scientific research conducted by American colleges and universities ? on Oct. 12. FAU matched the NSF grant with $142,000, for Mahgoub to develop a network that will make driving safer, traffic bearable and cars able to communicate with one another.

The goal of Mahgoub?s study is to improve roadway safety and traffic flow with the hardware and software tools needed to develop a vehicular ad hoc networking testbed on FAU?s Boca campus. In a vehicular ad hoc network, also known as a V.A.N.E.T., vehicles talk to each other wirelessly and they can also talk to roadside units and infrastructure.

This communication between cars enables a vehicle to get warnings of threats that their vehicle is in, like a traffic accident a mile away, to take preemptive actions to avoid being in traffic.

?It would help a lot of people, especially traffic and getting away from more accidents? Tami Nguyen, a junior anesthesiology major, said.

?Similar technology have been used in [Google cars]. Talking about safety, those cars have really traveled on California highways, on regular highways, millions of miles, without a single incident,? College of Engineering and Computer Science Interim Dean Mohammad Ilyas said.

Distracted drivers and pedestrians can be found all over the FAU Boca campus. Professor Imad Mahgoub is looking to make the roads a safer place. Photo by Jordanne Pitter

Mahgoub will be involving students by implementing research and projects in courses related to this study. Courses already being taught in this area include V.A.N.E.T., mobile computing, wireless networking and traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation system classes.

?This project is about the students,? Mahgoub said. ?There is a fund to support PhD. students to work on it. We have courses that are going to benefit from this project of the students who are taking the classes.?

Aleksandar Stevanovic, an assistant professor of civil engineering, is the co-principal investigator of this study. Stevanovic is one of the people responsible for the scientific conduct of this project.

?Students will get the opportunity to learn,? Stevanovic said. ?How some of this cutting edge technology works and what kind of impact will that have on their daily acts.?

Some students can?t wait for this cutting edge technology to impact their lives.

?I would love my car to tell me, ?Hey, accident ahead.? ?Alright cool, let?s get off?? James Eugene, a freshman mechanical engineering major, said.

Turnout light for Egypt anti-Islamist protest

CAIRO (Reuters) - Hundreds of Egyptian liberals and leftists rallied in Cairo on Friday to demand that Islamists stop foisting their ideas upon society, saying the days of one-party rule ended with the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak.

The turnout was less than organizers had hoped, suggesting opponents of Islamist President Mohamed Mursi have yet to capitalize on any popular disapproval with his first three months in office.

Clashes a week ago between Brotherhood supporters and their opponents left more than 100 people injured. Some Brotherhood officials voiced regret over last week's violence and the Islamist movement did not call for a counter-protest this time.

An Islamist-dominated body writing Egypt's new constitution released a draft this month that was met with suspicion by rights groups and liberals seeking to protect personal freedoms.

Mursi hails from the Muslim Brotherhood, a movement that Mubarak tried to suppress and now dominates politics after winning Egypt's first free and fair elections in decades.

He has pledged to defend the cause of Egypt's January 2011 uprising against Mubarak that was driven by anger at a corrupt, autocratic elite.

Opponents say he is repeating history by monopolizing power and is failing to crack down on religious zealots who threaten personal freedoms and Egypt's large Christian minority.

"Down, down Mursi-Mubarak," a few hundred protesters yelled as they marched towards Tahrir Square, cradle of the 2011 uprising. "Hold on, country. Freedom is being born."

At least 20 organizations ranging from human rights groups to revolutionary socialists, opponents of military trials, nationalists and liberals joined the protest.

By mid-afternoon, some 2,000 protesters were shouting their demands in Tahrir Square under banners proclaiming: "The people want a constitution for all Egyptians."

Some opposition parties are trying to unite to avoid another poor showing in a parliamentary election, due to take place once the long-delayed constitution is ratified in a referendum.

Romney and Obama head to their debate prep corners

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With one debate left, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney are retreating from the campaign trail to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains. He was to remain there with advisers until Monday morning. Romney was to spend the weekend in Florida with aides preparing the debate.

Romney running mate Paul Ryan planned a campaign stop in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Vice President Joe Biden was headed for St. Augustine, Fla.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Ryan accused Obama of stonewalling, telling Milwaukee radio station WTMJ on Friday that the president was refusing to answer even basic questions. "His response has been inconsistent, it's been misleading," Ryan said.

Obama stuck with domestic policy themes Friday, accusing Romney of moderating his stands and conveniently forgetting his past positions on economic and women's issues. He coined a new campaign term for his rival: "Romnesia."

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

Obama on debates: He?s getting ?the hang of this thing?

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa?Speaking publicly for the first time since his second national debate with Mitt Romney, President Barack Obama?who began a?campaign swing here in a small college gym?joked about his "improving" performance on the debate stage with the Republican nominee.

"Now, as many of you know, we had a second debate [Tuesday] night. You know, I'm still trying to figure out how to get the hang of this thing, debatin'," Obama said before a crowd of about 2,800 people, most of whom were students. "But we're working on it. We'll keep on improving as time goes on. We've got one left."

The third and final debate with Romney will be held in Boca Raton, Fla., on Monday and will focus on foreign policy. Obama's first debate in Denver, Colo., earlier this month was widely considered a win for Romney, but on Tuesday night Obama appeared significantly more alert and aggressive with his challenger.

The gym where Obama spoke on Wednesday was sweltering. Attendees waved campaign signs that read "FORWARD" in front of their faces while giant fans blew in cool air from the open door. When Obama walked onstage, the sleeves on his oxford shirt were rolled up, his collar was unbuttoned and a tie hung loosely from his neck. The scoreboard on both sides of the gym read "2012."

The president's remarks, often interrupted by cheers and shouts of support, included several swipes at his rival. He criticized Romney for his "five-point" economic plan, calling it a "one-point plan" in which the wealthy can "play by their own set of rules," and he chastised Romney for not providing more details about his tax reform plan.

"Here's a tip," Obama said. "Usually when a politician tells you he's going to wait until after the election to explain a plan to you, they don't have a pleasant surprise in store."

He later poked fun at Romney for saying at Tuesday night's debate?that he was provided "whole binders full of women" when he sought to hire more females on his staff while governor of Massachusetts, a line that has sparked hundreds of parodies on the Internet.

"I've got to tell you, we don't have to collect a bunch of binders to find qualified, talented women ready to learn," Obama said while promoting the hiring of women in the fields of math and science.

In a move late in his speech that may rattle conservative critics who accuse Obama of supporting a "government takeover of health care" through a health insurance overhaul, Obama argued that "I don't think your boss should control the health care you get. I don't think insurance should control the health care you get. I certainly don't think? politicians should control the health care that you get."

"We passed Obamacare?yeah, I like the term, because I do care?and I want to put these choices in your hands where they belong," he continued.

The president also has a stop planned on Wednesday afternoon in Athens, Ohio, a crucial state that both candidates are working furiously to lock down on Election Day.

How Dolphins Stay Awake For Two Weeks Straight

Dolphins can stay constantly alert for more than two weeks by sleeping with only half of their brains, researchers say.

These findings suggest how dolphins can keep on the constant lookout for sharks, investigators added.

Unlike land mammals, dolphins sleep with only part of their brains at any time, past research has suggested. Half of their brains rest, while the other half remains "awake," and dolphins regularly switch which side is active.

"After being awake for many hours or days, humans and other animals are forced to stop all activity and sleep," said researcher Brian Branstetter, a marine biologist at the National Marine Mammal Foundation in San Diego. "Dolphins do not have this restriction, and if they did, they would probably drown or become easy prey."

To see just how mindful dolphins are with just half a brain, researchers tested their ability to scan the environment. Dolphins use echolocation to map the world, a biological form of sonar where they emit clicks and listen for their echoes to probe murky, dark surroundings. [Sleep Tight! Snoozing Animals Gallery]

The researchers set up a portable floating pen outfitted with eight modules, each consisting of an underwater sound projector and microphone. When a dolphin scanned any of these modules using echolocation clicks, they could respond with sounds mimicking echoes of those clicks from remote surfaces. Essentially, these modules could behave as "phantom targets" ? illusions that acoustically simulated physical objects.

The scientists had two dolphins ? a female, Say, and a male, Nay ? continuously scan these modules. If they detected phantom targets, they were trained over the course of a year to press a paddle to get fish. The dolphin Say often gave victory squeals whenever she succeeded.

The scientists found these dolphins could successfully use echolocation with near-perfect accuracy and no sign of deteriorating performance for up to 15 days. The researchers did not test how much longer the dolphins could have continued.

"Dolphins can continue to swim and think for days without rest or sleep, possibly indefinitely," Branstetter told LiveScience.

These findings suggest that dolphins evolved to sleep with only half their brains not only to keep from drowning, but also to remain vigilant.

"These majestic beasts are true unwavering sentinels of the sea," Branstetter said.

Future research can help verify whether the dolphins stayed awake and alert for multiple days by sleeping with half their brains. This would require monitoring their brains for electrical activity via electroencephalogram, or a EEG.

"Research with freely moving humans who wear portable EEG equipment has been conducted; training a dolphin to wear a similar portable EEG backpack that is capable of withstanding and functioning in an ocean environment presents much greater challenges," Branstetter said. "However, these hurdles are not insurmountable. Also, we are interested in investigating if dolphins can perform more complex cognitive tasks without rest, like problem-solving or understanding an artificial language."

The scientists detailed their findings online Oct. 17 in the journal PLoS ONE.

Cowboys Player to look at: Felix Johnson

With DeMarco Murray unlikely to match up-and sure ineffective if he is doing because of a feet sprain experienced in Week 6-Johnson is deserving of most the touches from the Dallas backfield.

Johnson did well against a difficult Ravens defense last Sunday, sounding for 92 yards along with a TD on 18 carries. There?s a high probability he is able to repeat that success against a pitiful Panthers defense and assist the Cowboys earn a victory.

Panthers Player to look at: Cam Newton

Newton is battling with a dreadful sophomore slump, and lots of fans are wishing he is able to get out of it following a Panthers? bye week.

The signal-caller has connected on just 80 of 136 pass attempts for 1,154 yards and 4 TDs, while throwing five interceptions and paying three fumbles in five games.

Individuals simply aren?t acceptable amounts, especially because the stats from his Rookie of the season campaign were searching considerably better at this time around this past year.

Newton is facing a difficult Dallas secondary now, so he must discover a method to mix his effective running ability together with his cannon arm to obtain a W.

Conjecture: Panthers 21, Cowboys 20

The Panthers obtain a slight edge here, because they possess the home-area advantage as well as their backs are facing the wall.

Which team will win?

Panthers Cowboys Submit Election election to determine results

This team is just much better than its 1-4 record signifies, even though the defense must improve considerably from now on.

Due to the bye week, we?ve belief that coach Ron Rivera (as poor of the coach within the league as there?s, but nonetheless) continues to be capable of getting his personnel ready to steer clear of the Cowboys offense.

It?s likely to be very close, however the Panthers proceed to 2-4 after that one.

Cowboys beat author Brandon George clarified questions inside a chat Tuesday. Here are a few highlights.

Comment From Chris in NC ? How can you think the Boys O-line is going to do from the Panthers D-line. Carolina has already established nine sacks within the last two games.

Brandon George dmn_george: Difficult to say. The Cowboys? OL continues to be so up and lower this season, similar to the entire team, that you will have no idea what you?ll receive. They actually performed far better, particularly with their run obstructing, from the Ravens. I understand will still be at the start of the growing season, however the Cowboys really can not afford to get rid of at Carolina. I think you will visit a great effort in the Cowboys on Sunday.

Comment From BigMike ? What is happening to Miles Austin since his only season where he really set up great amounts? Appears like he?s regressed?

Brandon George dmn_george: He?s certainly disappeared for lengthy stretches during the last two games. Tony Romo has specific him a combined 11 occasions in deficits to Chicago and Baltimore the final two games in comparison to 28 targets for Dez Bryant. Austin must be a larger area of the offense. That?s particularly true thinking about the Cowboys don?t get much from Kevin Ogletree (not because the season opener in whatever way). Laurent Robinson was good this past year for that Cowboys and forced teams to take into account him more in the center of the area, which assisted Austin get open more. Teams do not show Ogletree that type of attention, permanently reason.

Comment From Dubbya ? Provide us with an update on Bruce Carter, should you please. How has he looked for you? Also, are we able to anticipate seeing Matt Manley escaping . around the area in the near future?

Brandon George dmn_george: I believe Bruce Carter has already established an excellent season. He?s certainly looked a lot more like the gamer the Cowboys thought these were getting once they drafted him within the second complete of New York despite his knee inury. He?s done perfectly in coverage, his strong point, and has been better from the run. So far as Matt Manley, he just has not practiced enough yet for that Cowboys to create him participating in game days. He needs to obtain more practices in prior to the Cowboys can function him to their special teams models. But that may come soon.

Dark matter filament studied in 3-D for the first time

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2012) ? Astronomers using the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope have studied a giant filament of dark matter in 3D for the first time. Extending 60 million light-years from one of the most massive galaxy clusters known, the filament is part of the cosmic web that constitutes the large-scale structure of the Universe, and is a leftover of the very first moments after the Big Bang. If the high mass measured for the filament is representative of the rest of the Universe, then these structures may contain more than half of all the mass in the Universe.

The theory of the Big Bang predicts that variations in the density of matter in the very first moments of the Universe led the bulk of the matter in the cosmos to condense into a web of tangled filaments. This view is supported by computer simulations of cosmic evolution, which suggest that the Universe is structured like a web, with long filaments that connect to each other at the locations of massive galaxy clusters. However, these filaments, although vast, are made mainly of dark matter, which is incredibly difficult to observe.

The first convincing identification of a section of one of these filaments was made earlier this year [1]. Now a team of astronomers has gone further by probing a filament's structure in three dimensions. Seeing a filament in 3D eliminates many of the pitfalls that come from studying the flat image of such a structure.

"Filaments of the cosmic web are hugely extended and very diffuse, which makes them extremely difficult to detect, let alone study in 3D," says Mathilde Jauzac (LAM, France and University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), lead author of the study.

The team combined high resolution images of the region around the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745 (or MACS J0717 for short), taken using Hubble, NAOJ's Subaru Telescope and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, with spectroscopic data on the galaxies within it from the WM Keck Observatory and the Gemini Observatory. Analysing these observations together gives a complete view of the shape of the filament as it extends out from the galaxy cluster almost along our line of sight.

The team's recipe for studying the vast but diffuse filament combines several crucial ingredients.

First ingredient: A promising target. Theories of cosmic evolution suggest that galaxy clusters form where filaments of the cosmic web meet, with the filaments slowly funnelling matter into the clusters. "From our earlier work on MACS J0717, we knew that this cluster is actively growing, and thus a prime target for a detailed study of the cosmic web," explains co-author Harald Ebeling (University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA), who led the team that discovered MACS J0717 almost a decade ago.

Second ingredient: Advanced gravitational lensing techniques. Albert Einstein's famous theory of general relativity says that the path of light is bent when it passes through or near objects with a large mass. Filaments of the cosmic web are largely made up of dark matter [2] which cannot be seen directly, but their mass is enough to bend the light and distort the images of galaxies in the background, in a process called gravitational lensing. The team has developed new tools to convert the image distortions into a mass map.

Third ingredient: High resolution images. Gravitational lensing is a subtle phenomenon, and studying it needs detailed images. Hubble observations let the team study the precise deformation in the shapes of numerous lensed galaxies. This in turn reveals where the hidden dark matter filament is located. "The challenge," explains co-author Jean-Paul Kneib (LAM, France), "was to find a model of the cluster's shape which fitted all the lensing features that we observed."

Finally: Measurements of distances and motions. Hubble's observations of the cluster give the best two-dimensional map yet of a filament, but to see its shape in 3D required additional observations. Colour images [3], as well as galaxy velocities measured with spectrometers [4], using data from the Subaru, CFHT, WM Keck, and Gemini North telescopes (all on Mauna Kea, Hawaii), allowed the team to locate thousands of galaxies within the filament and to detect the motions of many of them.

A model that combined positional and velocity information for all these galaxies was constructed and this then revealed the 3D shape and orientation of the filamentary structure. As a result, the team was able to measure the true properties of this elusive filamentary structure without the uncertainties and biases that come from projecting the structure onto two dimensions, as is common in such analyses.

The results obtained push the limits of predictions made by theoretical work and numerical simulations of the cosmic web. With a length of at least 60 million light-years, the MACS J0717 filament is extreme even on astronomical scales. And if its mass content as measured by the team can be taken to be representative of filaments near giant clusters, then these diffuse links between the nodes of the cosmic web may contain even more mass (in the form of dark matter) than theorists predicted. So much that more than half of all the mass in the Universe may be hidden in these structures.

The forthcoming NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope, scheduled for launch in 2018, will be a powerful tool for detecting filaments in the cosmic web, thanks to its greatly increased sensitivity.

Notes:

The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between ESA and NASA.

The international team of astronomers in this study consists of Mathilde Jauzac (Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, France, and University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa), Eric Jullo (Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, France and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, USA), Jean-Paul Kneib (Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille), Harald Ebeling (University of Hawaii, USA), Alexie Leauthaud (University of Tokyo, Japan), Cheng-Jiun Ma (University of Hawaii), Marceau Limousin (Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille and University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Richard Massey (Durham University, UK) and Johan Richard (Lyon Observatory, France)

The research is presented in a paper entitled "A Weak-Lensing Mass Reconstruction of the Large-Scale Filament Feeding the Massive Galaxy Cluster MACSJ0717.5+3745", to be published in the 1 November 2012 issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. The paper will be published online this week.

[1] The first identification of a dark matter filament was published in J. Dietrich et al, "A filament of dark matter between two clusters of galaxies" published in Nature on 4 July 2012.

[2] Dark matter, which makes up around three quarters of all matter in the Universe, cannot be seen directly as it does not emit or reflect any light, and can pass through other matter without friction (it is collisionless). It interacts only by gravity, and its presence must be deduced from its gravitational effects, for example its effect on the rotation rate of galaxies and its ability to deflect light according to the theory of general relativity.

[3] The light captured by telescopes encapsulates information about the object that emitted it. One important application of this is to study the redshift of an object (the extent to which its light is reddened by the expansion of the Universe) which can be used to measure distances. Estimating distances based on the relative brightnesses of colours that galaxies appear in images is done using a technique called photometric redshift. Although the precision of the distance estimate is limited, it is a relatively straightforward technique to use on large numbers of galaxies, and it works well even for faint objects.

[4] Spectrometers analyse the detailed properties of the light coming from an object. In this study, the subset of galaxies observed with spectrometers provided detailed information on the motion of the objects within the filament.
